Aunque no existe total certeza sobre los orígenes de Vinaroz, se han encontrado vestigios de asentamientos ibéricos, como el de El Puig.
El origen de Vinaroz
Se sabe que en el siglo XIII hubo una alquería situada junto al mar denominada de los «Beni-Al-Arus». Dicha alquería, se convirtió en poblado cristiano tras la conquista de Peñíscola por el rey Jaime I el conquistador, en el año 1241, adoptando el nombre de Bynalaros.
Jaume primer el conqueridor
Consiguió el título de Villa en el año 1540, en recompensa por el apoyo que prestó a la Corona durante el sangriento episodio del las Germanías. Ya en aquella época poseía uno de los puertos más importantes del Mediterráneo, con una pujante industria naviera.
Una prueba de la importancia de dicho puerto la constituye el hecho de que en él se embarcaron 15.000 del total de 300.000 moriscos que en el año 1609 fueron expulsados de España.

Consiguió en el año 1862 el título de Muy Noble y Leal Villa, otorgado por la reina Isabel II. El título de Ciudad lo consiguió en el año 1881, y le fue concedido por el rey Alfonso XII.
